Registration/Registration Procedures

Registration for classes, the process by which students choose courses to meet academic requirements, is one of the most important student academic activities. Continuing students are eligible to participate in preregistration in mid April for the fall semester and late November or early December for the spring semester.

Please register at your appointed times so that you will be assured a seat in the class. Please check your registration dates on Student Services online (https://ssol.columbia.edu).

Before You Register

  • Please check for holds before registering. Normally new students are placed on Measles, Mumps and Rubella Hold. Students must be in compliance with MMR and meningococcal meningitis regulations and cleared by the Student Health Services before registering. If you have any troubles registering because of this hold, please call (212)305-3400.
  • You can check for holds by checking online at: https://ssol.columbia.edu. You can get a list of classes by visiting the Mailman School home page. Please register early so that you will not be blocked out of classes.

Payment must be received by the due date or a late charge of $150.00 will be accessed to any account that is not paid in full. If you make any changes during change of program, you will be expected to pay any additional charges at the time of change in order to avoid the $150.00 late payment fee. Please address any questions for billing and payments by either calling 212-342-4790 or emailing the registrar’s office at askus@columbia.edu

  • By coming into the Registrar’s office located at 650 West 168 Street, Room 1-141(Black Building).
  • By calling the Registrar’s Office at 212-342-4790.

Add/Drop

After the change-of-program period, students will need approval from both their advisor and the Office of Student Affairs to add/drop courses. Approved forms must be brought to 1-141 Black Building to be processed. Program changes must be made in person. For individual courses dropped after the last day of the change-of program period, no adjustment of tuition will be made. There is also a date in the Academic Calendar after which courses may not be dropped.

Failure to attend classes or unofficial notification to the instructor does not constitute dropping a course and will result in a grade of UW (unofficial withdrawal). Courses can be dropped only through the change-of-program procedure described above.

Withdrawal Procedures

If you have registered and decide not to attend, the registration process will not allow you to drop all your classes. You must go to the Student Affairs office and process a Notice of Withdrawal form. In addition to this form, students will need to obtain an add/drop form and get the appropriate signatures and return it along with the withdrawal form to Student Administrative Services (Registrar).

Full-Time Status

All students who are taking 12 points and above are automatically considered full-time. If you are taking less than 12 points and need to be considered full-time for loan deferment purposes only, please consult with The Student Affairs Office for further clarification.

Health Fees

All full time students will automatically be charged Student Health & Student Insurance Fees. Part-time students must opt into health insurance options. Waiving out of these options is an important area to research and students must be aware of the need to take action each year. Required waiver information and deadlines are available online. For more information, please see the Medical Center Student Health Service website at http://www.mailman.hs.columbia.edu/studentaffairs/download-form.html
