Located on the Medical Center campus in the Hammer Building (corner of 168th Street and Fort Washington), the Augustus C. Long Health Sciences Library (one of the 25 libraries of Columbia University and its affiliated institutions) provides students at the Mailman School with an extraordinary array of resources. From the Health Sciences library's homepage available at http://library.cpmc.columbia.edu/hsl/, students can obtain information about the library's collections, services, classes, and more. Students may access the library's electronic resources (books, journals, databases, and more) both on and off campus by following links from the library's homepage and by inputting their Columbia University ID (UNI) and password whenever prompted. Students may also order materials from another Columbia library or items not available at the Columbia libraries by using the library's online request forms. Reference/research assistance is available to students on a walk-in basis at the library, via telephone (212-305-3692), via email (hs-library@columbia.edu), and by appointment for more extensive consultations.
In addition to using libraries of Columbia University and it s affiliates (including Barnard College, Teachers College, Union Theological Seminary, and the Jewish Theological Seminary), students at the Mailman School may also wish to take advantage of other great New York City area libraries.
The New York State Psychiatric Institute Library (http://nyspi.org/library/) is located on the CUMC campus on 1051 Riverside Drive and houses a unique collection specializing in the literature of psychiatry and mental health.
The New York Public Library (NYPL)'s website at http://www.nypl.org includes information on the many Branch and Research Division Libraries of the New York Public Library system. Students can register for an NYPL Access Card to take advantage of selected services (eg. Branch libraries circulate materials to those who sign up for a borrower's card). There is a Columbia Branch of NYPL on Broadway at 113th Street.
The New York Academy of Medicine Library (http://www.nyam.org/ ) supports the information needs of the divisions and centers of research dedicated to the Academy's commitment to enhance the health of the public. Since the early 1950's the Academy Library has been the only public medical library in the New York City area and as such has become an integral part of health information services to that community.
The Public Health Library of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/library/lib1.shtml) provides access to published health-related information for health care service organizations and for the general public.
Please visit the web sites of the individual Columbia libraries listed below to learn more about the library resources, collections, staff, and activities available to support student research and information needs.
