Mailman Student Handbook 09-10
1. Welcome
Dear Students,
You are entering into an experience of a lifetime! Students at the Mailman School are engaged in understanding health issues affecting populations locally, nationally and globally. One of the many great resources at the school is the faculty. The faculty at the school is involved in research that has had tremendous impact on the theory and practice of public health. Their work has added to the wealth and breadth of the field and continues to play a major role in the development of policy and advocacy issues.
One of the other great assets as a student at Mailman is the opportunity to live and study in the cultural capital of the world – New York City. Our students are able to work with the African-American and Latino communities of the Washington Heights and Harlem neighborhoods in promoting preventative health care and education. In addition, students take advantage of the culture of New York displayed, for example, in the museums, theaters, restaurants, and bookstores. Students also become a part of the extensive student life experience offered at the school and university. As a member of the Columbia University family, you have access to some of the most prominent figures in national and international arenas through special seminars and lectures. You also are encouraged to participate in the special events hosted by Mailman student organizations and university departments.
The last resource I will mention is your colleagues. You will be in classes with individuals who come from all walks of life. Your classes are filled with students who are culturally, ethnically, and racially diverse. You will sit with individuals who may be novices in the field along side those who have been in the field for years who are here to take advantage of the Mailman experience to expand their knowledge. These people will be your contacts and resources when you enter or continue to work in the profession.
Overall, as a Mailman student you are among the best! You are surrounded by some of the best faculty, you will be living and working in one of the best cities, and you have access to some of the best resources offered by a university. Make sure to take advantage of the Mailman opportunity, acquire the knowledge and implement it to make the most impact with the populations you are destined to serve.
Best of Luck!
With warm regards,
Marlyn Delva
